What and When is Palm Sunday 2015
One of the most important days in Christian calendar is Palm
Sunday. It is a day which is celebrated on the Sunday which falls before
Easter, to commemorate the event of triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into
Jerusalem. It is also the sixth or the last Sunday of Lent. This is an event of
historical significance and finds a place in all four canonical Gospels. It is
the day of the beginning of the Holy Week, which marked the events leading to
the death of Christ. This day is marked by processions of worshippers who carry
palms, as these were scattered by people in front of Jesus Christ as he entered
Jerusalem and rode through it. In some places, where palms are not easily
available, native trees such as willow, olive, yew and box are used, which is
why Palm Sunday is sometimes called Yew Sunday and Branch Sunday.

History of Palm Sunday
According to the canonical Gospels, the triumphal entry of
Jesus took place a week before the Resurrection, which is the reason why the
festival falls on the Sunday before the Easter Sunday. It is mentioned that as
Jesus rode through the city on a donkey, people laid the branches of trees as
well as their cloaks in front of him. Since a donkey symbolizes peace in
contrast to the horse which stands for war, it is believed that Jesus came into
the city as the Prince of Peace. People wanted to honor him, which is the
reason why they covered his path as he travelled into the city. The
significance of using palms for this purpose is that they represented victory
in the Roman culture.
The celebration dates back to the late 4th
century, when it was celebrated in Jerusalem, with prayers and sermons as
people moved through the city. They reached the place where Jesus ascended into
Heaven and gospels would be read by the clergy about the entry of Christ into
the city. The people would then return to the city church, holding palm and
olive branches and chanting “Blessed is He that comes in the name of Lord”.
Gradually, the celebration of the event spread to other parts of the world,
adding some more customs and rituals to the original festival. Later, in 16th
-17th century, Palm Sunday celebration included the immolation of a
straw effigy, which was first abused and stones, and later burnt. This was the
Jack-o-Lent figure and symbolized Judas Iscariot, who was guilty of betraying
Jesus Christ and this was a way to take revenge on him. Another belief is that
this effigy marked winter, which was destroyed to usher in the spring season.

Customs of (sermons) Palm Sunday in
Modern Times
Palm Sunday is a Christian festival celebrated all around the
world. The original custom of Palm Sunday in most parts of the world is to
receive fresh palm leaves, which have been blessed, on this day. However, in those
countries where these cannot be procured easily, some changes have been made
for the purpose of practicability. The ceremony starts with blessings of the
palms, followed by a Procession and the mass, where worshippers sing the
Passion and the Benediction. Then, people take the palms back at their homes
and place them there. In some countries, it is customary to take the palms to
the graves. After the celebrations are over, the blessed palms are burnt and
their ashes are kept to be used for the Ash Wednesday in the next year. Some
other traditions are associated with the festival in different parts of the
world. In some countries like Belgium and Finland, children go around the hoses
to ask for coins and candies. Italians celebrates Palm Sunday by decorating the
entrances of their homes with palm leaves and olive branches, as the latter are
readily available in the region.
Palm Sunday is a festive occasion of reflection of the last
few days of the lives of Christ, when people get themselves ready for the agony
of His Passion and the soon to come joy of Resurrection.

It is wiser to build our dependance on God than building it on people, because people can choose to leave us at any moment. But only we can choose to leave God because He is ever present and there for those who need and seek Him with a sincere Heart. Happy Palm Sunday!
Ride on, ride on in majesty!
In lowly pomp ride on to die;
O Christ, thy triumphs now begin
O’er captive death and conquered sin
